The "AIP model" is foundational to how EMDR works. Basically, this model theorizes that life experiences are processed by our brain and our nervous system. The idea is simple: Symptoms exist for a reason. Symptoms (flashbacks, intrusions, nightmares, anxiety, depression, etc) exist as a result of a distressing life experience(s) that has happened recently or in the past. Our brain and body, which God created to be geared towards healing itself, gets stuck from time to time. Most of the time, when we have a stressful experience, our brain and bodies are able to naturally reprocess and integrate that experience, learn from it, and move forward relatively smoothly, with resilience. This is evidenced by military members who have multiple deployments and do not develop any symptoms.
However, sometimes aspects of the distressing life experience get "stuck" in the brain/body and they need help to integrate it properly. This is completely normal and happens to everyone from time to time. Think of it this way....
consider when you have a cut on your arm, sometimes it will heal naturally on its own. Other times, it may get infected and need additional care and attention to heal. In this case, you would clean out the wound, keep it dry and clean and give the body help in healing it. The process is painful but the results make it worthwhile. Our brains work the same way. Stuck processing usually occurs when the experience overwhelms the brain’s innate storage mechanisms. This can be due to the intensity of the experience itself and/or the cumulative effect of multiple (similar) adverse experiences.
In person EMDR Intensives are for those who want to experience faster results in therapy. EMDR Intensives are conducted in Madison, Georgia.
Situations in which people have chosen EMDR Intensives include:
This is my "give back" tour to those who serve. As such, I am providing a deep discount on intensives. As many of my military clients say - "I get it because of experience, not because I read a book." An EMDR Intensive is organized like a "mission". The goal - symptom relief. Lines of effort are the "targets" we identify and then reprocess. It's laser focused on your "story" and structured to help you achieve victory. And like any mission, you press onward until the mission is complete. This is perseverance in the face of adversity. Every mission has a beginning, a middle and an end. Then, you conduct an After Action Report to evaluate your success. And as we have all learned in our military work, the more we do, the more we can do. The advantage of an EMDR Intensive is that there are no starts and stops because time is up as in traditional talk therapy. We press onward, clearing targets in a systematic fashion based on the way your brain/body has stored the experience.
